Metatarsalgia is a term used to describe generalized pain in the forefoot usually on the bottom or ball of the foot. Pain in this area is usually around the base of the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th toes. It is usually caused by a collapse of the transverse arch that runs across the ball of the foot. Tight confining footwear can contribute to the problem as can twisting or shearing movements during toe-off.
