What is an Advanced Foot Care Nurse?

Advanced Foot Care Nurses are registered with the Ontario College of Nurses and have also received additional, specialized training in foot care. They have the experience and education required to provide safe, high-quality care. At Elio’s Foot Comfort Centre, they offer custom foot care solutions for patients of all ages and activity levels.

Elio’s Advanced Foot Care Nurses treat and prevent foot health issues related to Diabetes and other diseases. They also provide general and preventative foot care for a wide range of foot conditions, including nail issues, corns, calluses, warts and fungal infections.

Typically, the initial visit with one of Elio’s Advanced Foot Care Nurses will include a full history and foot exam, which will allow for the development of a comprehensive management plan to satisfy the patient’s foot care needs.

Elio’s Foot Comfort Centre’s Advanced Foot Care Nurses provide:

  • Nail care
  • General foot care
  • Diabetic foot care
  • Risk assessments
  • Removal of corns and calluses
  • Wart treatments
  • Wound prevention and treatment
  • Fungal Infection treatments
  • Nail trimming
  • Ingrown toe nail treatments
  • Athlete’s Foot treatments
  • Ulcer treatments

Why are these services important?

  • Toe nail care

For people who find it difficult to reach their feet because of an injury, arthritis in the hips, or if their hands and fingers are unable to use nail clippers, an Advanced Foot Care Nurse can help. In fact, Elio’s Advanced Foot Care Nurses can also identify certain nail conditions such as thickened or fungal nails that can cause discomfort.  Patients will benefit from the necessary treatment to alleviate the problem and enable them to walk pain free.

  • Corn/callus/wart removal

Corns and calluses are thickened areas of skin that are caused by increased pressure to that area. Although this problem can be painful, regularly scheduled treatments by an Advanced Foot Care Nurse will benefit a patient by using techniques such as pads and orthotics to reduce pain and pressure.

  • Fungal infection treatment

Fungal infections such as Athletes Foot are common and prosper in warm moist areas such as the space in between toes. Such an infection can be quite uncomfortable causing itching, flaking skin, peeling and cracks in the skin. A Chiropodist is trained to provide advice on an effective treatment that would be suitable. Additionally, a Chiropodist can tackle any fungus that has spread to the nails.

  • Preventative care for diabetic patients

Foot care for patients with diabetes is very important. Individuals with diabetes tend to heal slower from cuts and injury due to a decrease in the body’s ability to fight infection as well as decreased circulation especially to parts farthest from the heart such as feet. In addition, diabetes can cause nerve damage in the feet, which alters a person’s protective sensation. As a recommended solution, regular visits with an Advanced Foot Care Nurse at Elio’s would include detailed assessments of the feet, observation for any cause of concern and injury and the required treatment.

  • Diabetic ulcers

An ulcer is commonly referred to as a break or wound in the normal integrity of the skin. An ulcer can form due to decreased sensation within the feet or decreased circulation, which can occur with diabetes. An ulcer can increase the risk of infection and possible amputation if treatment is not implemented. Consultations could cover evaluation of the wound, reducing pressure, offloading, footwear advice, dressings and work with the patient to achieve proper healing

Overall, patients can benefit from the expert service provided by an Advanced Foot Care Nurse at Elio’s where we create custom solutions to make feet healthy and happy.
